Darlene Heupel, 96

The funeral service for Darlene Heupel, 96, of Aberdeen, SD, will be 10:00am, Thursday, April 3, 2025 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, with Pastor D.T. Rawerts officiating. Burial at Salem Emmanuel Cemetery in Long Lake, SD. Darlene died Saturday, March 29,2025, at Bethesda Home in Aberdeen, SD.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Darlene Scherbenske was born on April 13, 1928 in Campbell County, SD to George and Lydia (Preszler) Scherbenske. This is the area where she attended rural school. In 1943, they moved to a farm near Leola where she graduated from Leola High School with the class of 1946. She taught school and worked on the family farm.

On February 15, 1961, she married Julius A. Heupel in Leola. They lived on the Heupel homestead and made their living farming until the time of Julius’ death on June 15, 1978.

Later she moved to Long Lake, SD and in 1979 she moved to Aberdeen.

Darlene was a member of the Trinity Evangelical Church, volunteered in nursing homes and hospitals, and was a cook for the Long Lake school system. She also enjoyed crocheting, baking, and cooking.

Grateful for having shared Darlene’s life are her nieces and nephews; Priscilla Fischer, Larry (Shari) Scherbenske, Dianne Furman, Mavis Tooker, Janice (Jacob) Kirschenman, Allan (Kristie) Scherbenske, Nancy (Anthony) Farrell, Evangeline Diede, Charles (Nancy) Helfenstein, Ronnie (Lily) Helfenstein, Carol (Chester) Sayler, Floyd (Kelva) Helfenstein, Duane (Linda) Rogers, Gail (Ralph) Fisk, Joanne Harrington, Vernon (Carol) Rogers, Cheryl Schoenfelder, Robert (Shelley) Scherbenske, Randy Scherbenske, and Sharrie Scherbenske; sister-in-law: Shirley Scherbenske, and numerous other loving family members.

Preceding Darlene in death are her parents; George & Lydia Scherbenske, husband; Julius Heupel, brothers; Rueben (Edna) Scherbenske, Eugene Scherbenske, and Walter Scherbenske, sisters; Ella (Calvin) Diede, Erna (Fred) Helfenstein, and Olivia (Irvin) Rogers, nephews; Elroy Scherbenske, Dean Rogers, and Greg Rogers, and niece; Rosa Rogers.
