PIERRE, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- The South Dakota debated HJR5003 which would raise the threshold to approve change to the South Dakota Constitution to 60%.
Speaking in favor of the bill on the floor was Senator Sue Peterson of Sioux Falls.
Senator Liz Larson of Sioux Falls talks about the success rate of changing the constitution on the 50% plus one.
Larson talks about previous amendments attempting to change the threshold has failed.
Senator Kevin Jensen of Canton compare changing the state constitution to that of the U.S. Constitution.
Senator Tim Reed of Brookings who voted in favor of the resolution, talks about past history of trying to change this.
The resolution passed on a 29-4 vote. The voters will decided this in the 2026 general election.
