Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 14, 2025, at Concorida Lutheran Church in Cresbard, with Rev. Tom Penrod and Rev. Jacob Smith officiating. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at the Cresbard Cemetery.
For what I (Paul) received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.” 1 Corinthians 15:3-4
Helen Ruth Holsing was born April 27, 1933, in Cresbard, SD, to Howard and Etta (Roth) Harbaugh. She was united in marriage to Wayne O. Holsing on December 29, 1953. They were blessed with 49 years of married life together. They had three children: Cyrece, Wynn, and Shawn.
Helen graduated from Cresbard High School and Northern State University after obtaining a two-year teaching certificate. She began her teaching career in Clark, SD, substitute taught one year in Niagara Falls, NY, then returned to Cresbard where, in the Cresbard school system, she taught 2nd grade and finally, for many years, kindergarten. In 1979, Wayne and Helen moved to Spearfish, SD, where she taught piano lessons and music at several private schools. In 1990, they returned to Cresbard, SD, where she continued to substitute teach whenever needed. Helen also directed many church adult/children’s cantatas and had a lot of fun directing a singing group of girls called “The Swinging 7”.
Helen was always very busy using her God given talents as a dedicated church musician playing organ and directing choirs for over 50 years. She also took great pride as a farm wife where she helped in the fields, planted vegetable gardens, canned fruits and vegetables, and (her second love) tending beautiful flower beds.
Helen is survived by her children: Cyrece (Rod) Kono, Wynn (Virginia) Holsing, and Shawn (Wayne) Spidahl; grandchildren: Dustin (Savannah) Kono, Shane (Kari) Kono, Walker (Angela) Holsing, Mackenzie (Jason) Oberfoell, Wyatt (Breanna) Holsing, Angela Spidahl, and Hallee (Jesse) Stark; and 10 great-grandchildren: Anneliese, Wylder, Marlena, Miranda, Jace, Jadon, Raelynn, Ellie, Wesley, and Quinn.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her sister, Virginia Klitz.
Helen and Wayne raised their children in the Christian faith, which was the very essence of their lives. Family was also extremely important to them, and their greatest joy was getting together with them for holidays and family events/trips. Helen loved it when the family visited and was always very interested in the lives of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The Family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at Derian Place and Avera @ Home Hospice for the loving and compassionate care they demonstrated while Helen was under their care.
Luce Funeral Home of Faulkton has been entrusted with Helen’s arrangements.
