Volga man arrested following pursuit in Brookings County

VOLGA, S.D.(KXLG)- A Volga, South Dakota man was arrested Tuesday evening, March 4, 2025, following a vehicle pursuit by the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office. Markcus Williams, 37, of Volga, faces multiple charges after attempting to evade law enforcement.

According to the press release, at approximately 8:34 PM, a Brookings County Sheriff’s Deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a vehicle observed speeding and driving into oncoming traffic on US Highway 14 near Samara Avenue. The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Markcus Williams, failed to stop and attempted to evade the deputy by driving south on Samara Avenue, also designated as 464th Avenue in that area.

The vehicle, a 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe, then became stuck in a ditch but was able to regain the roadway. Williams then drove north on Samara Avenue, south of Volga, before again entering a ditch. The vehicle then struck a field approach and became airborne, vaulting before coming to a stop.

Deputies were able to take Markcus Williams into custody at the scene of the stop. The Brookings Ambulance service was called to the location, and Williams was brought to the Brookings Emergency Room for evaluation of unknown injuries. He was treated and released from the Brookings ER and then transported to the Brookings County Detention Center.

Markcus Williams is currently being held in the Brookings County Detention Center on multiple charges including Driving Under the Influence (DUI) – 2nd Offense, Driving While Revoked, Aggravated Eluding, Reckless Driving, Speeding, and Lane Driving. Bond for Williams will be determined at a future hearing.

The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office statement indicates that alcohol is believed to be a factor in the incident. The pursuit and related events remain under investigation by the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
