Senate State Affairs Committee passes HB1259(Bathroom bill)

PIERRE, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- On Monday night the South Dakota Senate State Affairs Committee heard testimony on HB1259.  The bill would prohibit unauthorized access to certain multi-occupancy room.

Prime sponsor of the bill, Representative Brandei Schaefbauer of Aberdeen offered an amendment to the bill.

Schafbauer emphasize the point of the bill.

Focus of the story will be on the situation that appeared to happen in Huron High School back in 2023.  The father of the two daughters involved Cody Grace discussed what happened at the school.

Grace talks about what his daughters did reporting it to leadership at the school and their response back to them.

Opposing the bill were two female students that attended Huron High School.

They talked about how much of an impact the bill would have to their daily lives if passed and signed into law.

Sara Rankin, Executuve Director of the Municipal League offered no official stance but discuss concerns about the bill.

Representative Schaefbauer was asked by the committee exactly what the purpose of the bill is.

Chair of the Senate State Affairs Committee, Senator Jim Mehlhaff offer support of the bill but discuss that some changes may need to be made to improve it.

the bill passed out of the committee on a 7-2 vote.
