PIERRE, S.D.(SDBA) — Lawmakers haven’t abandoned a proposal to require acceptance of cash at public school events.
The House Education Committee Wednesday advanced a measure from Sen. Greg Blanc that would require public, K-12 to accept physical cash at sponsored events.
The legislation comes in response largely due to the Sioux Falls Schools District making a move last year to do exactly that — only accept debit or credit card payments at their school sponsored events.
Rep. John Sjaarda, the driving force behind the reform this year, said that the policy is excluding loved ones from attending their kids events.
A similar measure, that included technical and Board of Regents institutions, failed in the same committee earlier this year. Senate Bill 219 is slated to be heard in the House on Friday.
