He attended several country schools and Columbia Parochial School until the 9th grade and then continued helping his dad on the farm. At the age of 16 he took flying lessons and kept up his license for 25 years. In 1948, he attended a welding and mechanics class in Ellendale, ND. Then in 1949, he went on to SDSU in Brookings for a 1-year Ag class. In December of 1950 he enlisted in the Air Force. He did his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, TX.
Lloyd married his childhood sweetheart, Doris Bohling, on July 31, 1951 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Columbia. Lloyd was stationed in Tucson, AZ with his wife Doris, where they made their first home. Due to his father’s health, Lloyd was honorably discharged in November of 1951 and returned home to farm. Lloyd spent 30 years on the farm Northwest of Columbia. He raised many unique animals including buffalo, long horned steers, and turkeys.
In 1981, Lloyd and Doris moved into Columbia, where he resided until his passing. For a few years, Lloyd worked for many different trucking companies. From 1991-1995, Lloyd and Doris volunteered for Laborers for Christ, rebuilding churches and schools. In 1999 he volunteered for the Orphan Grain Train in Norfolk, NE driving semi over 500,000 miles across the US delivering items for those in need. Lloyd retired from trucking in 2010 at the age of 83. He then enjoyed his days traveling, visiting the farm, caring for his yard, and spending time with family.
