ABERDEEN, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- The second and final Legislative Coffee was held Saturday at the Kessler’s Champions Room at the Barnett Center on the campus of NSU.
The only legislators that were able to appear were District 1 Senator Michael Rohl, District 3 Senator Carl Perry, and District 3 Representative Al Novstrup. Everyone else had prior committment that prevented them from appearing.
District 1 Senator Michael Rohl:
Senator Rohl discuss a pair of school related bills that dealt with voting taking place on either primary or general elections instead of special elections.
Rohl also addressed HB1132 that dealt with obscence/pornographic materials in public places for example at a library.
Rohl also addressed a number of transparency bills he has been working on this year. One that wasn’t successful was SB9 & he talks about office holders who expressed concerns about that one.(SB9)
Rohl discussed the issue of property taxes in relation to public schools(SB216).
Rohl told the audience that he is not a believer of eminent domain for the pipelines but talked about a line he has with regards to eminent domain toward other projects.(SB198)
Rohl also discussed a bill he supported raising the age of marriage from 16 to 18.(SB156)
District 3 Senator Carl Perry:
Senator Perry was asked about his stance on the funding for SDPB.
Perry was asked to comment on HB1259 unofficially labeled the “bathroom bill”.
Perry disagreed with Senator Rohl on SB198 and explains why.
Perry also discussed another vote he disagreed with Senator Rohl regarding raising the marriage age to 18.
District 3 Representative Al Novstrup:
Representative Al Novstrup a bill he was in favor of moving school board elections from to special to either place instead in general or primary elections.
Novstrup also addressed HB1132 that he voted in favor of.
Novstrup told the audience about his stance on property taxes.
Novstrup also addressed his support for HB1259.
Legislators return to Pierre on Monday. Crossover day is coming up Tuesday where every bills starting in their respective chamber must either be passed or be defeated.
