PIERRE, S.D.(SDBA)- A $2 million plan to help restore flood-ravaged McCook Lake drew mixed reactions’

Wednesday in a legislative committee hearing.

HB 1108, introduced by Republican Rep. Chris Kassin from Vermillion, would establish the McCook Lake Contingency Fund to provide grants for lake cleanup, restoration, pipe replacement, and flood mitigation planning following last year’s record flooding.

Rep. Kassin:

Kassin said the bill is designed to complement state agency efforts and serve as a “backstop” based on the scope of a Department of Game, Fish and Parks lake restoration plan.

Opponents, including Duncan Koch (cook) with the Bureau of Finance and Management, argued the bill duplicates disaster relief funding provided by the recently passed HB 1033.

The House Appropriations Committee, chaired by Rep. Mike Derby, R-Rapid City, deferred action on the bill.

He requested Game, Fish and Parks to provide more project scope and timeline details to the sponsors.
