PIERRE, S.D.(SDBA)- South Dakota lawmakers said no to giving college students more freedom in choosing where they live and eat on campus.

The House of Representatives voted 42-28 Tuesday against House Bill 1193.

Republican Rep. Phil Jensen from Rapid City sponsored the bill.

Money worries led many lawmakers to vote no.

Republican Rep. Mike Stevens from Yankton.

Some lawmakers said living on campus helps students do better in school–and there is flexibility.

Republican Rep. Amber Arlint from Sioux Falls.

One House member said the college students who brought their concerns to Pierre did their homework.

Republican Rep. Josephine Garcia from Watertown.

Currently, state universities require students to live on campus for two years.

Schools can let students live elsewhere if they ask.

Debate on the bill became more than just where college students could live.

Representatives mentioned the impact of COVID-19 on today’s college students, paying off the state’s bonds for dormitory construction, freedom of choice, economic and community development, campus life, networking, and student debt.
