PIERRE, S.D.(DRGNews)- A piece of the polar vortex that typically holds arctic air around the North Pole has broken off and moved south, causing unseasonably cold temperatures in part of the United States and Europe this week.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Megan Mulford reviews some of the low temperatures recorded in the Pierre/Fort Pierre area since the cold moved in.

The city of Aberdeen saw lows during this time at -21 on Monday and projected to be -25 on Tuesday.

Mulford says some record or new record lows were set around South Dakota Monday night into Tuesday morning.

In a total reversal, Mulford says we’ll have unseasonably warm temperatures this weekend and into next week.

If you took some photos showing the results of the subzero temperatures, the Aberdeen National Weather Service office invites you to submit them to their photo contest. Pictures must be taken between Feb. 18-Feb. 24, 2025, in central or northeast South Dakota or western Minnesota.

In North Dakota, National Weather Service data shows Bismarck’s temperature got down to minus-35 on Monday, breaking a 150-year-old record of minus-30 for the date of Feb. 17. On Tuesday, Bismarck got down to minus-39, breaking the record of minus-37 that was set Feb. 18, 1910.
