Two vehicles go through ice in two days in Day County

DAY COUNTY, S.D. (KELOLAND) — Multiple vehicles have gone through the ice in Day County.

The Day County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook, warning people to be aware of conditions on the ice, as two vehicles have gone through in two days.

The first report happened on January 11 at around 12:05 a.m. A vehicle went through the ice near 145th Street and 442nd Avenue at the State Boat Launch on Bitter Lake. The reporting party did not request any assistance at the time of the incident.

The second vehicle went through the ice at approximately the same location a day later on Jaunary 12. This individual was able to escape his pickup and get out safely. The man was returned to the boat launch and checked for injuries.

Day County Sheriff’s Department thank the following for their assistance:

“Shane Guy, who drove our Deputy on the ice and assisted in recovering the man and getting him to safety. Also, thank you to the Day County Ambulance, Watertown Dispatch, Watertown Search and Rescue, Waubay Fire Department, and our local dispatcher, Matt Gaikowski for all of their services in saving this man.”
