The memorial service for Lucy Weigel, 70, of Aberdeen, SD, will be 10:30am, Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, with Pastor Mike Waldrop officiating. Burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Aberdeen. Lucy died Friday, January 10, at home in rural Aberdeen.
Visitation will be 5:00-7:00pm, Tuesday, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 South Main Street, Aberdeen.
Lucy Ann Luke was born May 27, 1954, to Vernon and Jo Ann (Koglmeier) Luke in Aberdeen. She grew up on the family farm near Bath, SD, and attended elementary school in Bath. Lucy loved farming with her father. She then attended Simmons Junior High in Aberdeen. Lucy played the clarinet in band and played at basketball and football games with the marching band. After graduating from Central High School in 1972, Lucy attended SDSU for a year. She returned to the farm and worked at 3-M for one winter.
Lucy met John Weigel in 1970, and they were united in marriage on October 1, 1977, in Aberdeen. They moved to Minneapolis, MN, for a year before returning to help on the farm. Lucy and John later moved to the farm and started a dairy. They milked for 35 years before retiring from farming. Lucy worked at Guthmiller Accounting from 2007 to 2018, when she had to retire due to her health.
Lucy was a Sunday school teacher at Faith United Methodist Church in Aberdeen for many years. One of her quirks was that she hated wearing shoes. She learned to bake with her mother and loved baking cookies and pancakes with her grandchildren. She learned gardening with her grandmother, later becoming a Master Gardener with Prairie Partners. Lucy loved growing beautiful flowers, tomatoes, and having a large vegetable garden. She always loved the farm and animals. As a teenager she had a horse, had many dogs and cats over the years, and truly loved her cows.
Grateful for having shared Lucy’s life are her husband of 47 years, John Weigel; children: Chelsey (Jesse) Papke and their child Evan and Adrienne (Dan) Besser and their children Lauren and Molly; and her in-laws: Henrietta Weigel, Kathy Weigel, and David (Kum) Weigel.
Preceding Lucy in death are her parents, Vernon and Jo Ann Luke, and her brother Allan Luke.
