City of Sioux Falls could vote what to do with Riverline District

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.(KELO)- If you live in Sioux Falls, you’ll probably be called to the voting booth in the next year or so to determine the fate of this so-called Riverline District in downtown Sioux Falls.

That property currently holds the old Sears building just east of downtown.

The city council approved an eight-million dollar purchase agreement to buy the land, which is the site of a proposed Convention Center.

City Councilor Rich Merkouris says the Riverline Steering Committee will begin fleshing out plans for the property as early as next month.

The city is scheduled to close on the purchase of the land on July first.

The Sioux Falls City Council is moving forward with plans to buy land in the downtown district for development.

But, they’re keeping their options open on what that development should be.

They approved an 8-million dollar purchase agreement to buy the old Sears Building site just east of the Big Sioux River.

Mike Gray of the Sioux Falls Development Foundation says the purchase agreement allows flexibility.

City Councilor Rich Merkouris says the Riverline Steering Committee will work on fleshing out plans for the property starting next month.

From there, the City Council will schedule a vote to allow public input on the plans that are offered.
