PIERRE, S.D.(KCCR)- The November election is bringing a significant change to the South Dakota Legislature in 2025 On the Legislative Research Council website 42 of the 105 lawmakers are listed as new members with seven having served before. That means 35 members have never walked the halls of the Capitol. That’s where District 24 Representative Mike Weisgram stepped in recently.
Weisgram was just one of a number of veteran lawmakers to give an orientation to new lawmakers. He says lawmakers are going to have to expand their knowledgeable base to be successful.
Weisgram says this year with the turnover, lawmakers like himself will need to step up to help shepherd the rookies.
The 100th session of the South Dakota Legislature opens January 14th with the State of the State address.
