Chris was born on May 12, 1970, to Joe and LaCinda (Patten-Johnson) Hanson at St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre, SD. From birth, he faced a future of mental and physical challenges. He remained at home with his parents and siblings until he was about two years old when he went to live at Barb Kellogg’s home (a Lutheran Social Services’ sponsored home) in Sioux Falls, SD, where he and five other individuals with special needs were cared for. In April of 1974, Chris was transferred to Custer State Hospital and remained there until it closed in 1996. He was then transferred to the Aspire Aldrich House in Aberdeen.
Chris was always a favorite of the staff wherever he lived, and his family has always appreciated the excellent care and service from his caregivers. They are especially grateful to his caregiver family at the Aldrich House, who cared for Chris for the past 28 years. In addition to receiving outstanding love and care, they supplied his every need and never failed to address every concern. Chris was not just a client or a resident at the Aldrich House, but he was family to them. The care, love, and devotion shown to Chris was above all standards, and it was very comforting to the family to know he was so loved and cared for.
Chris’s family would like to thank his Aspire family for the loving care given to Chris and the courtesies shown to them while Chris was in their care, and the Avera Hospital doctors and staff and Avera Hospice team for the care shown to Chris and the support given to the family during his final days.
Chris is survived by his parents, Joe (Sally) Hanson of Aberdeen; brothers, Tim (Robyn) Hanson of Highlands Ranch, CO, and Daron (Lisa) Hanson of Winterport, ME; nephew, Kyle, and nieces, Hillary, Nikki and Katie Hanson.
Chris was preceded in death by his mother and grandparents.
