Larry passed away peacefully in his sleep November 5th 2024 at a Clarkson Hospice in Rapid City, SD.
Larry was born January 7th 1941 to Clarence Harry Nupen and Honore Hildegard (Benjaminson) Nupen at Hudson, SD. He spent his childhood on his maternal Grandparents farm between Bryant and Lake Norden.
He completed his elementary schooling at the Cleveland # 1 rural school and attended Lake Norden High School , graduating in 1958. After high school Larry attended South Dakota State College where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in History and a Master of Education. While at SDSU Larry participated in ROTC receiving his Air Force Commission and went on to receive his Navigator Wings in the Air Force. Larry flew several combat missions while serving in the Viet Nam area. Larry served in the Air Force from1964 until 1974. Larry then moved to Aberdeen South Dakota and transferred to the Air Force Reserve and then the Army Reserve from1978 to 1989 to finish out his 20 years of service.
After retirement Larry was active in many organizations. Larry was a life Member of the Reserve Officer Association, NRA, VFW, DAV and Fraternal Order of the Eagles where he was President for three years. Larry was a Paid up for Life member of the American Legion in Aberdeen where he served as Post Commander, District 14 Commander and State Vice Commander. Larry was also a Life Member of the 40 and 8 and was Its local Chef De Gare and the State of South Dakota Chef De Gare (State Commander) and the Cheminat National Representative in 1994 and 1995. Larry also fully funded the Viet Nam Memorial Scholarship to honor the fallen South Dakota State College graduates.
Larry married Clarice Neumann Kappenaver on August19. 1989.Clarice passed away on December 29, 2015 after a difficult fight with Cancer.
Larry is survived by his brother Curtis Nupen and Sister-in-Laws Helen Nupen and Colleen Nupen, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and five brothers.
He is a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. Services will be held at 10:00am, Saturday, November 16, 2024, at Our Savior Lutheran Church and after services he will be laid to rest by his wife In the Riverside Cemetery with Military Honors.
