A grant last spring from the Governor’s Office of Economic Development was put to work over the summer, providing training for people interested in opening childcare operations.
Education Services supervisor Laura Smith-Hill of Lutheran Social Services was one of the trainers who took 29 women through a program to help them get up and running.
The city of Sioux Falls is one of the partnering organizations.
The city council approved a 450-thousand dollar scholarship program earlier this year, to help people receive the training they need to open new childcare centers.
Smith-Hill says partner organization Start-Up Sioux Falls played a vital role.
The program graduates could create more than 450 childcare slots once they get their new businesses started.
