Betty Lou Hoffman, 78

Betty Lou Hoffman, 78, of Long Lake, SD passed away peacefully on November 3rd, 2024, at home surrounded by her family. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am, at St. James Lutheran Church in Leola, SD, on Friday, November 8, 2024. Interment will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen, SD.

Visitation will be 5:00-7:00pm, Thursday, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 South Main Street.

Betty Lou Hoffman was born August 18th, 1946, to Oscar and Frieda (Retzer) Hilgemann in Eureka, SD. She lived in Eureka until the age of 6 when the family moved to Williston, ND. In 1963 Betty moved back to Eureka where she graduated from Eureka High School with the class of 1964. Betty worked as a secretary for GF Mutual Insurance until 1968. She married Gary Hoffman on August 18th, 1968, at the Reformed Church in Eureka, SD and they lived on the farm east of Long Lake, SD.

Betty was a member of St. James Lutheran Church where she sang in the mixed choir, was a member of the women’s group, serving as secretary for a number of years, and taught Sunday School. She loved all aspects of farming but particularly hated fencing. She enjoyed gardening, working on crossword and jigsaw puzzles, reading and spending time with family and friends. Time with her great-grandson Hudson was especially precious.

She is survived by her loving husband Gary, her daughter, Cynthia (Kelly) Hulm of Bismarck, ND and her son, Greg (Anita) Hoffman of Bismarck, ND. She was blessed with four grandchildren: Rachel (Ryan) Kaelberer of New Salem, N, Ashley (Mason-fiancé) of Bismarck, ND, Alexis Hoffman of Colorado Springs, CO, and Kaden Hoffman of Bismarck, ND. In addition, she had one great-grandchild, Hudson Kaelberer of New Salem, ND. Betty is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law Carolyn (Eugene) Lynch of Williston, ND and many loving nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents Oscar and Frieda Hilgemann; her sister-in-law Shirlene Shannon and her brother-in-law Bernard Shannon.
