Roy Winder, 91

Britton, SD: The funeral service for Roy L. Winder will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 12, 2024 at First Presbyterian Church in Britton. Dan Winder, Roy’s son, will officiate the service. Burial will be at the Britton Cemetery with military honors.

Roy Lee Winder was born October 23, 1932 in Terry, MT to Merrick “Lee” and Estella (Hildreth) Winder. At a young age he and his family moved to Newark, SD for a number of years before moving to Britton in 1942. He attended his schooling in Britton.

On February 14, 1951 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He did his bootcamp and training at Camp Pendleton in CA. Following boot camp he was deployed to the Philippines and Korea for his service. He served alongside Jim Triana who became a lifelong friend. Roy was honored to be a Marine – “Marine for life” and “Once a Marine, always a Marine” were slogans he proudly lived by each day. He was honorably discharged in June of 1952.

Following his service he spent a few months in the St. Paul area working at the Ford plant before moving back to Britton. He began working for the local post office in May 1953 and would work his way through the ranks from clerk to rural route carrier. Roy was very good at his job, and had his route memorized. He enjoyed having people tag along on his route and those fortunate to ride with him will cherish those memories on Rural Route Number 2. After 37 years with the post office, Roy retired in September 1987.

Roy married Rochelle “Rocky” Sckerl on January 30, 1954 in Britton. They would make their home in Britton for the next 70 years, and raise their four children.

After retiring from the post office Roy would spend a couple summers helping Paul Bremmon on the farm. He also worked with Maynard Eikamp at Hortons cutting cardboard for a number of years. He enjoyed going for morning and afternoon coffee at Fun After Fifty and shaking dice. When he was at home he was an avid Weather Channel watcher.

Roy was a lifetime member of the Presbyterian Church. For 72 years he was a member of the American Legion Post #80, and Britton Marshall VFW Post #3507 where he served as a commander for a number of years. Each year he and other fellow Marines proudly celebrated the Marine Corps Birthday, starting out at Roy and Rocky’s home and eventually growing and being held at the VFW in Britton.

Roy passed away Sunday, October 6, 2024 at Wheatcrest Hills in Britton, at the age of 91.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Rochelle “Rocky” Winder; his children: Cindy (Mark) Hartinger, Dan (Carla) Winder, Annette (Paul) Scanlan and BobbiJo Almos; his grandchildren: Brian Hartinger, Matthew (Stephanie) Hartinger, Nathan (Leslie) Hartinger, Timothy Hartinger, Alyse Winder, Alex (Marie) Winder, KC (Bryahna) Almos and Jonathan (Sarah) Van Beek; and 14 great-grandchildren.
