John was born March 9, 1940, to Louis and Catherine (Schmit) Roos. He grew up on the family farm next to Tulare, SD. He attended Tulare Schools and graduated from Tulare High School. He attended South Dakota State University in Brookings for one year but decided to return to the family farm. John married Gloria Blume in Redfield on September 20, 1960. To their union, three children were born.

At the age of 17, John joined the National Guard. He was never deployed but proudly served his country for eight years. After his service, he became a member of the American Legion.

John drove a bus for Tulare Schools for over 40 years. Most of that time, he was also the bus foreman doing the repairs and maintenance on the buses. He drove students to every sport and extracurricular activity possible. He said people were always telling him they had ridden on his bus and now their children were riding on his bus. He was also active in Tulare sports activities as an announcer and official statistician.

John and Gloria baked and decorated cakes and cupcakes of all kinds for about 30 years with John doing the decorating. They were particularly busy during graduation season.

John farmed on the family farm until 1990, when he sold his land and equipment to his son Daryl. He continued to help Daryl from time to time for several years.

John was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church and was very active in the church including the Knights of Columbus and taking communion to the homebound. He was a longtime member of the Lions Club and a member of the Tulare Volunteer Fire Department. John enjoyed attending his children’s and grandchildren’s sports and school events, car rides, fishing, family events, and family gatherings.

John is survived by his children Sheryl (Kevin) Oliver of Sioux Falls, SD, Loretta Haring of Odenton, MD, and Daryl (Connie) Roos of Tulare, SD. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his wife Gloria, parents Louis and Catherine, an infant brother, an infant sister, and his son-in-law Scott Haring.
