Mary Hemen, 66

Mary Margaret Hemen, 66, of Westport, SD passed away peacefully at home in the presence of family on June 9, 2024. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, June 15, 2024, at Northern Plains Baptist Church with visitation starting at 9:00 am. Burial will follow at Lakeview Cemetery, Columbia, SD.

Mary was born in Pueblo, Colorado on February 17th, 1958, to Raymond H. and Ruth Christine (Bernholtz) Schmitz. She was the eldest of 7 children and a great help to her parents. For most of her early years, Mary moved frequently with her family between various locations in Colorado. In 1985 Mary met Brian Hemen, the love of her life, while they were working at Storage Tek in Louisville, CO. They were married on June 7, 1986, and raised three beautiful girls in Coal Creek Canyon, CO. Mary advanced in her career at Storage Tek working as an executive administrative assistant before retiring to raise two more children. Brian and Mary moved to the Aberdeen, SD area in 2000, and settled in Westport, SD in 2011 where she enjoyed country life until she went home to be with the Lord.

In 1983, in Platteville, CO, two ladies came to Mary’s door and shared the plan of salvation from the Bible. That day, Mary accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior and trusted in Him solely for her salvation. She became a child of God and eternally secure because of her faith and the love of Christ.

Mary loved the outdoors and could be found hiking, biking, or camping with friends and family. She was known for being an amazing cook, specifically her Colorado Green Chili and her egg rolls. Over the years she perfected her cupcake recipe and was nicknamed the “Cupcake Queen” by her loved ones. She loved to be involved in her church, teaching Sunday school and singing solos and duets during Sunday services. Although she wore many hats, Mary’s favorite job was being a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Mary is preceded in death by her parents Raymond and Ruth, and her brother, Kenneth ‘Kenny’. Mary is survived by her husband of 38 years Brian; siblings Randy (Wendy), Stan, Ray (Linda), Renee (Dan), and John (Diane); children Mandy Setliff (Keith), Mindy McCarthy (Patrick), Melony Filsinger (Steve), Luke Hemen (Makenna), and Lydia Pearson (Jared); grandchildren Kendra, Ethan, Deacon, Maryanne (Nathaniel), Brianna, Ally, Slade, and Locke, and one on the way; and great-grandchild Finnegan.

The family would like to express our thanks to Pastor Neil Hannahs and the church family, as well as the many friends and family for the years of love, prayer and support though out Mary’s illness and passing. Above all, thanks to God for His mercy in the duration of Mary’s illness and His grace in taking her home.02
