Adam John, son of Regina (Knoepfle) and John Lutz, was born November 16, 1941 six miles SE of Artas. When he was eight, Adam’s dad died and the family moved into Artas. Adam attended country school and Artas School. During these years, he spent lots of time on the farm with his uncle, Emil Knoepfle helping with the farm in a variety of ways. In his later teens he worked in construction until he settled back in the Artas area. Adam married Carol Schlaht at Peace Lutheran Church in Herreid on January 18, 1963. They lived briefly in Artas and then moved a home onto Adam’s homeplace. This is where Adam lived the rest of his life. He enjoyed playing cards and tinkering; however, his greatest, lifelong occupation was farming and driving the milk truck for the Eureka Cheese Factory for a few years before his retirement.

After his retirement, even though he never “actually” really retired, Adam continued to help his neighbors with field work and cattle related help, planted trees for the ASC office and was an expert at gardening.

Adam was well known for helping anyone who needed it. Whether it was his family, friends, or community neighbors, he could always be counted on to arrive shortly after a phone call to help with whatever the project may have been.

Anyone who knew Adam knew he loved to joke around and have fun and could always be found with a toothpick in his mouth. He always said, “we have to laugh too”. He was a very “stoic” man. Adam dearly loved his wife Carol and one of his greatest joys was his grandkids. He was so very proud of everything they did and always looked forward to seeing them.

Adam is survived by Carol, his wife of 61 years; one daughter, Becky (Del) Harty of Aberdeen; three sisters—Marilyn Vilhauer of Herreid, Idella Fried of Aberdeen, and Elaine Levi of Artas; two grandchildren—Megan (Ryan) Thyen and Matthew (Leah) Harty; step granddaughter, Lezlie (Jared) Vilhauer; one great grandchild, Rylee Thyen; and two step great grandchildren Isabella and Jack Vilhauer.

He was preceded in death by his father, John, on August 22, 1950; his mother, Regina, on May 2, 2004; and his brother, Bobby, on November 27, 2017.

Casketbearers will be Matthew Harty and Ryan Thyen of Watertown, SD; as well as Dennis Jahraus and Greg Schumacher of Eureka; Dan Knoepfle of Gillette, WY; and Adam Knoepfle of Artas. Organist will be ruth Mittleider and the congregation will sing “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”. Recorded vocal selections will be “I Don’t Have to Worry Anymore” by Doyle Lawson and “Jealous of The Angels” by Donna Taggart.

Adam’s funeral will be livestreamed at the Lien Family funeral Care Facebook page. The family requests casual dress at his funeral.

Services are in care of Lien-Straub-Carlsen Chapel, Eureka.
