Obituary
Melva Maxine (Newman) Olson, 93, of Redfield, SD passed away Friday, December 31, 2021, at Community Memorial Hospital in Redfield.
Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., without family present, on Thursday, January 6, 2022, at Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield. She will be laid to rest at a private family committal service at Greenlawn Cemetery in Redfield and a public memorial service will be planned for a later date. On March 16, 1928, Melva Maxine Newman was born to David and Gladys (Curtis) Newman on the farm west of Tulare, SD. She spent her early childhood on a farm near Burdette, SD and later on a farm north of Zell, SD. In 1946, Melva graduated from Redfield High School. She then attended and graduated from Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen, SD in 1947 with a teaching degree. Before becoming a farm wife and mother on a farm north of Frankfort, SD, she spent two years teaching in country schools.
Melva married Harold E. Olson on September 25, 1949, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Redfield. They enjoyed square dancing together and attending many of their children’s and grandchildren’s activities. After retirement, they moved into Redfield.
Quilting at the church and embroidering dish towels were her greatest pastimes. Melva was a proud member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Friendship Circle, Harmony Extension Club, and the neighborhood birthday club.
Melva will be missed by her children: Linda (Dewayne) Siebrasse of Aberdeen and their children: Ryan Siebrasse and Nicole Siebrasse; Dallas (Susan) Olson of Redfield and their children: Billy (Shannon) Sherman and Jason (Jenny) Sherman; and Darlys (Curt) Zaske of Sioux Falls, SD and their children: Adam Zaske, Aaron (Amanda) Zaske, Anitra (Tommy) Eckes. She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers: Marvin Newman and Milton (Devonna) Newman; and two sisters: Marion Dring and Marlis Freeburg.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Harold, three brothers, two brothers-in-law, and two sisters-in-law.
