The Northern State men’s basketball program opened its home slate with a 78-55 win over South Dakota Mines Friday evening as part of the East/West Challenge at Wachs Arena. The Wolves hit a barrage of 3-pointers in the win, the second-straight for Northern State.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Sophomore forward Kobe Busch hit three straight 3-pointers in a 75-second stretch to move the Wolves from a 3-point deficit into a 6-point lead.
  • The Wolves never looked back after that, stretching their lead to as many as 20 by the end of the first half and maintaining that distance throughout the second half.
  • Northern was 12-of-30 (40 percent) from long range in the win and shot the ball better than 50 percent from the floor overall.
  • The Hardrockers, meanwhile, were just 32.7 percent from the floor and committed 17 total turnovers in the game.
  • Northern turned those miscues into 24 points, plus outscored its guests 26-16 in the paint.

The Northern State men’s basketball program held off Black Hills State 92-90 Saturday afternoon at Wachs Arena to end its first homestand of the season and improve to 4-2 overall. The Wolves trailed by two at the break, but rallied late and held on to claim their third straight victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Black Hills State took the early lead, but could never press its advantage into a lockdown lead. The Yellow Jackets, who lived by the long ball on Saturday with 31 3-point attempts on 55 total shots in the game, led by a single possession, 48-46, at the break.
  • Northern trailed late in the game. The Wolves did not take the lead for good until just over a minute left in the game on a driving layup from Sam Masten, who had a career-high 34 points.
  • Masten again drove the lane to put the cap on Northern’s scoring with 20 seconds remaining.
  • Black Hills State managed just one free throw in the game’s final three minutes of play.
  • Sindou Cisse finished with 26 points for the Yellow Jackets. PJ Hayes came off the bench for six 3-pointers and another 20 points in his first action of the season.
